The Ruler Theory of Selling: The RULER Protocol for Winning Customers Satisfied with a Competitor

A customer who is satisfied with a competitor is one of the hardest selling situations: there is no visible reason to bear the cost and risk of switching. This paper presents the Ruler Theory, which emerged from the author's training and consulting practice. The customer rates the current experience on a ten-point scale, explains what earns that score, and identifies what separates it from an ideal experience. The paper develops this core into a three-link decision chain: the RULER protocol to locate the gap (Respect, Use a scale, Locate the gap, Estimate the impact, Request a test), a GAP test of the gap's importance, and a TEST step that proves the alternative at minimum risk. It adds the ACCESS framework for deciding whether an account is worth a conversion attempt, and a matrix linking gap importance to the firm's ability to close it. The paper reviews literature that explains some of the tool's mechanisms (choice-supportive memory distortion, psychological reactance, self-persuasion and adaptive selling), states what that literature does and does not support, and reports an applied case and a counter-case.
