THE INSIGHT-UTILITY RETENTION PRINCIPLE (IURP): A Conditional Framework for the Deliberate Retention of Recognized Illusory Beliefs and Their Motivational-Functional Consequences
AbstractThe Insight-Utility Retention Principle (IURP) is proposed as a conditional frameworkfor investigating a specific psychological phenomenon: an individual recognizes that a belief isinaccurate, exaggerated, or insufficiently supported, yet deliberately retains or activates thatbelief because the individual anticipates motivational or functional benefits. These anticipatedbenefits may include confidence, readiness to act, persistence, behavioral engagement, andprogress toward highly ambitious goals. The framework distinguishes epistemic recognition from deliberate retention, perceivedutility from observed utility, motivational activation from behavioral translation, and sub-jective confidence from objectively assessed performance. Its proposed default mechanism, the Insight-Preserved Instrumental Retention Mechanism (IPI-RM), is organized into tencandidate processes and integrated through a Retention-Activation Translation-Calibration(RATC) loop. A sixteen-layer architecture specifies the conceptual, psychological, temporal, mathematical, and empirical domains of analysis.Seventeen candidate variables, seven mathematical model components, ten researchhypotheses, eight illustrative case classes, and a sixteen-step research protocol are specified. The framework also distinguishes consciously used aspirational framing from clinical delusionsand from beliefs maintained through impaired reality monitoring. Its central empiricalquestion is whether deliberate retention provides explanatory or predictive value beyondestablished accounts of self-efficacy, optimism, goal commitment, metacognition, and self-regulation. The proposed framework is conditional and falsifiable: any motivational benefitmust be demonstrated rather than assumed, and adverse outcomes, null effects, and competingexplanations must be considered explicitly. Keywords: insight recognition; deliberate retention; perceived utility; motivational activa-tion; behavioral translation; reality monitoring; self-regulation; positive illusions; mathematicalmodeling; falsifiability
