The Post-Cybernetic Organisation, Part II: The Thermodynamics of Organisational Extraction

Where the work that metrics cannot see actually goes, and why burnout follows from it. If formal systems cannot capture an organisation, organisations still function: something closes the gap between the dashboard and the work. This paper states the answer as a conservation law for organisational variety. What formal systems leave uncaptured does not disappear but is displaced, and the displacement runs as a cascade: first to workers, who bridge the gap through cognitive and affective labour; then to the organisation, which accumulates informal debt and fragility; then to products, customers and external parties. In healthcare, transport and infrastructure the cascade can end in death, as the margin between normal operation and lethal failure erodes out of sight. The paper introduces the η operator to describe bridging labour, and develops a thermodynamic reading in which burnout and system failure appear as two signatures of one constraint, the heat signature of a gap the formal system cannot close. It draws on Ashby's law of requisite variety, Heidegger's analysis of technological enframing (Gestell) and research on cognitive load and allostatic stress, with cases from software engineering, healthcare and retail. The framework is diagnostic: it explains why optimisation pressure produces the consequences it does, without prescribing an intervention. Abstract

This is the second paper of The Post-Cybernetic Organisation. It follows From Cybernetics to Chiasm to Category, which locates the gap, and it is followed by The Dissolution of Orders and The Membrane Architecture. The Post-Cybernetic Organisation:I. From Cybernetics to Chiasm to CategoryII. The Thermodynamics of Organisational ExtractionIII. The Dissolution of OrdersIV. The Membrane Architecture
