Challenge, Hallucination, Imagery, and Motor Suggestion Scale (CHIMSS)
The Challenge, Hallucination, Imagery, and Motor Suggestion Scale (CHIMSS) is a novel set of imaginative suggestions that each demand the utilisation of phenomenological control. This scale consists of three suggestions of each type: motor suggestions for arm levitation, hands coming together, and head nodding; challenge suggestions for hands stuck together, fingers stuck together, and arm immobilisation; imagery involvement suggestions for a beach scene, an animal-identification scene, and a future scene; and hallucination suggestions for a mosquito, two tastes, and hearing a song playing automatically. The scale notably excludes suggestions for amnesia, post-hypnotic behaviour, and visual hallucinations. It also includes three alternative imagery involvement suggestions that can be used in place of the existing ones or in addition: a meadow scene, a woods scene, and a scene involving identification with a celestial being or superhero. The introduction script and suggestions were modified from the Phenomenological Control Scale (Lush et al., 2021). The imagery involvement suggestions were modelled after the Imagery Involvement/Dissociation suggestion in the Elkins Hypnotizability Scale (Elkins, 2013, pp. 99–124).
