Application of Artificial Intelligence in Sports Performance Analysis

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a key aspect of today's sports and is revolutionizing the way athletes are evaluated, trained, and monitored. It enables coaches, sports scientists and athletes to process vast quantities of performance data to uncover pattern recognition that they might not be able to see with traditional techniques. Technologies ranging from machine learning, computer vision, wearable communications, predictive analytics, to automated video analysis, are now being applied to the study of technical skills, physical performance, tactical movements, training workload, recovery, and injury risk. These technologies can deliver real-time, personalized information, which can support coaches in creating training programs based on an athlete's specific needs and make informed decisions. Physical, physiological, biomechanical, and psychological data can also be used to identify and predict talent using AI. However, there are some drawbacks to using AI in sports. Some of the things that need to be taken into consideration include data quality, privacy concerns, the high costs, and the lack of technical expertise, algorithmic bias, and ethical issues. This article explores the key domains where AI is utilized in sports performance analysis, its advantages for enhancing athlete progress and performance, and the challenges and potential future developments of AI in sports.
