Isometric Handgrip Exercise dalam Mempertahankan Kekuatan Otot Lansia: Studi Kasus
Background: Older adults are vulnerable to age-related declines in muscle strength, which may affect functional capacity and daily independence. Isometric Handgrip Exercise is a non-pharmacological intervention that may help maintain muscle strength. Objective: This study aimed to describe the application of Isometric Handgrip Exercise as a preventive nursing intervention to maintain muscle strength in older adults, as indicated by handgrip strength. Methods: A descriptive case report involved a 67-year-old male with hypertension and reduced handgrip strength. IHE was performed at 30% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) for two weeks (10 sessions), in four 2-minute sets per session with 1-minute rests. Blood pressure and handgrip strength were measured with a digital sphygmomanometer and a hand dynamometer. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results: Blood pressure decreased from 184/82 to 135/72 mmHg while the subject continued antihypertensive medication. Right handgrip strength increased from 13.2 to 16.2 kg (+22.7%), whereas left handgrip strength remained relatively unchanged (6.7 to 6.8 kg) after an initial decline. Conclusion: Isometric Handgrip Exercise shows preliminary potential as a preventive nursing intervention to help maintain handgrip strength in older adults. However, the findings cannot be generalized or establish its effectiveness beca.
