Beyond the Four Year Degree: AI, the Crisis of Scale, and the Reinvention of the University
What if the future of higher education isn’t about making college cheaper or more accessible, but fundamentally rethinking what universities exist to do? As artificial intelligence transforms how we acquire knowledge, the traditional four year degree deserves reconsideration. I argue that higher education’s pursuit of scale has diluted some of the qualities that once made universities distinctive. This position paper explores a different model: universities focused on original research, meaningful experimentation, exceptional mentorship, and demonstrated curiosity rather than standardized coursework and credentialing. The goal isn’t to improve the existing system incrementally. It’s to reconsider the institution itself.
