Identifying Evidence-Informed Guidance for Anti-Racism Allyship in Higher Education: A Scoping Review Protocol

This is a protocol for a Campbell Review following JBI scoping review methodology. The objective is to answer the following question: What has been reported in the literature about evidence-informed actions that individuals without lived experience of racism in positions of power and privilege can take to promote anti-racism allyship in higher education? Specifically, the review will address the following questions: (1) What models or theories (i.e., organizing frameworks) explain how anti-racism allyship should occur in higher education? (2) What actionable strategies are recommended for administrators, educators, staff, and students to address racism independently and in partnership with those who have lived experience of racism? The review will map the characteristics of the literature, including the populations, disciplines, and higher education contexts represented, and will examine how anti-racism allyship is conceptualized and enacted. It will also distinguish between actions that individuals in positions of power and privilege can undertake independently and those that involve collaboration or partnership with people with lived experience of racism. Finally, the review will identify gaps in the literature related to models, theories, populations, contexts, and actionable strategies for promoting meaningful and sustained anti-racism allyship in higher education.
