The Importance of Serving Particular Populations as It Relates to Basic Needs: An Overview
ABSTRACT Addressing the basic needs of historically marginalized college student populations is critical to fostering equity and inclusion within higher education. These students often face unique challenges that hinder their ability to succeed academically and thrive personally, such as food insecurity, housing instability, and limited access to healthcare. By prioritizing the well‐being of marginalized students, colleges and universities can create more equitable learning environments, improve retention and graduation rates, and fulfill their missions of social justice and community engagement. Institutions must also invest in culturally responsive support services that reflect the lived experiences of these students. Additionally, involving students in the design and evaluation of basic needs initiatives ensures that solutions are relevant, sustainable, and rooted in community voice.
