The 5C Framework: Adapting Marketing Strategy Across Arab Markets
Because Arab markets share a language and much media content, firms are tempted to treat them as one market and transfer campaigns and products by translation or by swapping faces and phrases. This paper argues that nationality describes where a customer is but does not explain the customer's decision, and that differences among Arab markets run both horizontally, between countries, and vertically, between generations and segments within a country. It proposes the 5C framework for testing the transferability of a strategy before expansion across five dimensions: cultural codes, customer context, commercial and financial infrastructure, country rules and competition, and consequences of error. The paper introduces the concept of financial market accessibility, with its three movements (money in, money through and money across), as a dimension often missing from market assessment, and links the framework's output to three decisions: standardize, adapt or rebuild. It positions the framework within the standardization–adaptation literature in international marketing and reports field observations from Iraq, Jordan and Libya, with explicit limits on their generalization.
