Nestin can activate gene expression in cells.
Intermediate filaments encompass a variety of cytoskeletal and barrier-enriched molecules which possess the ability to transduce signals through a force- or tension-based mechanism. We propose that for the intermediate filament, this force or tension translates to a quantitative signaling output. We demonstrate here that the intermediate filament nestin (NES) can, as predicated, activate gene expression in a discrete fashion.
