Speed and Direction Control of a Three-Phase Induction Motor Using a Siemens PLC Training Kit

Three-phase induction motors drive most industrial machinery, and their speed and direction are commonly controlled with a frequency inverter commanded by a PLC. This paper describes the design and simulation of speed and direction control of a three-phase induction motor using a Siemens PLC training kit. The program provides start/stop, forward/reverse selection with interlocks, ramp-limited speed setpoints and protective functions. Speed tracking and reversal behavior are evaluated by simulation. In simulation the speed followed the setpoint with a slip-related error of 3.5-17.5 % at half load, and a full reversal from +50 Hz to -50 Hz took 10.3 s with a 5 s ramp.
