A Developmental Model of Cognitive Flexibility and Psychological Adjustment in Children

Cognitive flexibility is one of the developmental capacities of children’s mental functioning that enables them to modify cognitive strategies, reconsider their interpretations, and adapt their behavior to changing circumstances. The present study aims to explain a developmental model of cognitive flexibility and clarify its relationship with children’s psychological adjustment by examining the cognitive, emotional, and social mechanisms underlying this association. This study employs a descriptive-analytical approach based on library research and a review of relevant scholarly articles. The analysis indicates that the development of the ability to shift between mental rules, inhibit inappropriate responses, and reinterpret difficult situations is associated with improved emotion regulation, conflict resolution, and adjustment within family and school environments. Furthermore, the development of this capacity is a gradual process influenced by the maturation of executive functions, the quality of parent-child relationships, educational experiences, and opportunities for peer interaction. The evidence suggests that psychological pressures and inflexible educational environments may restrict opportunities to practice adaptive responses, whereas psychological safety, dialogue, and problem-based activities can facilitate the development of diverse cognitive strategies. Accordingly, the proposed developmental model explains cognitive flexibility through its interaction with emotion regulation and environmental experiences and emphasizes the importance of simultaneously considering children’s developmental characteristics and educational conditions in strengthening psychological adjustment.
