Digital Modernity and Human values in Arvind Adiga's Fiction
Abstract Because of the advent of the digital era, human relationship, communication, human identity, learning, culture, and literature have all changed. With the advent of the Internet, social media, smart phones, digital publishing and artificial intelligence, the way people read and write literature in India has changed greatly, impacting everyday life. Indian English literature has always been sensitive towards the changes in society and now it is venturing forth to face the type of conflicts that globalization, technological development, consumerism, urbanization, social inequality and different relationship between humans and humans have introduced to the world. The present paper tries to speak on the representation and reconstruction of human values in the Indian English literature in the context of digital modernity. It asserts that literature is still an important moral territory to question dignity, empathy, equality, truth, identity, freedom, responsibility and human relationships. In the representative works presented, The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga and Selection Day, technological advancement and human values are explored. Moreover, the paper discusses the development of literary forms in the digital realm in India including digital literature, blogs, online literary platforms and forums, social media writing and electronic literature. Finally, a conclusion is provided on how digital technology has expanded the field of Indian English literature and how it has created new ethical dilemmas. The ability of literature to be relevant is to always keep the human dignity and ethics as the focus of technological development. In the digital age, human interactions, communication, identity formation, education, culture and literary creation has been radically changed. In terms of literature, the internet, social media, smart phones, digital publishing and AI have changed the face of the Indian landscape, not just in the ways in which we live, but in how we create and consume books. The Indian English literature, which traditionally responds to changes in the society, has taken an increasing interest in the issues of conflicts and challenges emerging out of globalization, technology, consumerism, urbanization, social inequality, and changing patterns of human interactions.
