Thermal Management and Power Distribution Design for High-Resolution Large LED Video Walls

High-resolution LED video walls have many closely spaced LEDs and drivers and therefore a high power density. Heat and power distribution determine their brightness stability, lifetime and safety. This paper presents the design of the thermal management and power distribution of a high-resolution large LED video wall. Heat generation, cooling and temperature rise are analyzed, and supply wiring, voltage drop, inrush current and protection are designed and checked by calculation and simulation. In the design calculation and simulation the cabinet temperature rise at full white is 5 K with fans and 33 K without, the far-end voltage drop is 0.9 % (AC feeder) and 2.3 % (DC cable), and staggered start-up reduces the inrush current from 1073 A to 165 A per phase.
