The Δ Architecture of Grammatical Transformation

Grammatical transformations may be described through different mechanisms even when the structural relations under examination are comparable. This article presents the Δ operatorial architecture as a tool for the comparative classification of these relations and develops the operatorial component of the framework proposed in The Metamorphosis Formula (2025). Within this framework, an intervention is represented at two coordinated levels: at the macrostructural level, it expresses the relation between configurations treated as wholes and the stabilized outcome of the intervention; at the microstructural level, it specifies the internal organization of the configuration and the dependent material affected in relation to the relational nucleus R₀. The distinction between relational orientation, which concerns the correspondence or function between configurations, and executional orientation, which concerns the modification of dependent material, allows distinct analyses of the same phenomenon when they address different aspects. The framework systematizes eight regimes: directional correspondence, integration, semantic or grammatical reorientation, correlated replacement, relational coupling, elimination, positional reorganization, and cumulative paradigmatic organization. Δ formulas are selected and specified by applying pre-established classification criteria after identifying the structural relation, rather than being created ex nihilo. In this sequence, the relation precedes its representation, just as a general mathematical equation precedes the assignment of values to its variables. Comparisons with Minimalism, Distributed Morphology, Word-and-Paradigm morphology, and Construction Grammar, together with examples from Romanian, English, and Modern Greek, illustrate how the Δ vocabulary enables the comparison of grammatical relations without replacing the explanations specific to each theory. Overall, the Δ architecture offers a formal framework for classifying grammatical transformations and comparing analyses developed within different theoretical perspectives
