Peran Dukungan Keluarga terhadap Penerimaan Penggunaan Scoliosis Brace pada Remaja dengan Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: Studi Observasional Analitik

Background: A three-dimensional spinal curvature deformity commonly found among adolescent girls often imposes significant psychosocial burden, particularly during scoliosis brace use as the primary conservative therapy. Brace acceptance is a critical determinant of treatment success, and family support is thought to facilitate this psychosocial adaptation, although specific evidence among adolescents attending prosthetic-orthotic services in Indonesia remains limited. Objective: To analyze the relationship between family support and acceptance of scoliosis brace use among adolescent girls with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) at Mojokerto Prosthetic-Orthotic Clinic. Method: This study used an analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach. Samples were selected using consecutive sampling among adolescent girls using scoliosis braces. The independent variable was family support (emotional, informational, instrumental, and appraisal), while the dependent variable was brace acceptance (perception, comfort, and barriers). Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation and multivariate linear regression controlling for age, brace-wearing duration, and initial Cobb angle. Results: Sixty respondents were analyzed. Total family support score had a median of 65 (range 48–76), while total brace acceptance score had a median of 42 (range 25–53). Family support was significantly correlated with brace acceptance (rs=0.61; p<0.001) and remained an independent predictor after adjusting for covariates (β=0.42; p<0.001), explaining 39% of the variance. Conclusion: Family support was significantly associated with brace acceptance among adolescent girls with AIS. Involving families in education and clinical follow-up may improve conservative scoliosis therapy outcomes.
