The Ethical Frontier of Industry 4.0: Strategies for Eco-Friendly Technological Advancement
Industry 4.0's rapid digitization, driven by Cyber-Physical Systems, IIoT, and cloud computing, boosts operational efficiency but creates critical environmental and ethical imbalances. The relentless pursuit of hyper-efficiency accelerates resource depletion, electronic waste generation, and the marginalization of human-centric work. To address these systemic issues, this paper applies the multidimensional STEEPLED framework—analyzing social, technical, economic, environmental, political, legal, ethical, and demographic dimensions. Based on these insights, the authors propose four sustainable design heuristics: Green Edge Computing, Modular Hardware Design, Algorithmic Eco-Fencing, and Human-Centered Proximity Governance, offering a structured pathway to align industrial automation with environmental sustainability and human-centric governance.
