From the '85 Art Movement to the '85 New Wave: The Migration of Consecration in Chinese Contemporary Art, 1986–2008
This paper compares critical, curatorial, and archival texts produced between 1986 and 2008 and asks how each names the '85, sets its temporal frame, and positions politics, internationalization, the market, and the artist. It advances a single mechanism-bearing claim: the canonization of the '85 is best understood not as a succession of competing interpretations but as a migration of the agent and site of consecration, from critical naming toward institutional archivization, and it is along this migration that the object was progressively depoliticized. Drawing on Bourdieu's account of consecration, Guillory's reframing of canon formation, and Assmann's distinction between working memory and the stored archive, the paper reads its coded corpus as a record of this shift, and rules out two rival explanations: political censorship and Western translation.
