Lookahead Occlusion-Ordering Intervention Optimization (LOOIO): Preview-Based Selection of Object Visibility Constraints in Generative Models

Generative models increasingly produce images, videos, and three-dimensional scenes containing multiple interacting objects. In such scenes, the relative visibility of objects is an important factor affecting object completeness, boundary consistency, scene composition, and spatial plausibility. However, object visibility relationships may be ambiguous during generation, particularly when multiple objects overlap, partially occlude one another, or interact across different spatial and temporal regions. Applying an incorrect occlusion constraint too early may cause an object to disappear, become partially fragmented, or exhibit an implausible intersection with another object. Lookahead Occlusion-Ordering Intervention Optimization (LOOIO) is proposed as a framework for dynamically selecting object visibility constraints through preview-based evaluation of their potential downstream consequences. Instead of permanently imposing a predetermined front-to-back ordering, LOOIO generates alternative occlusion-ordering interventions, temporarily relaxes ambiguous relationships when appropriate, and evaluates the predicted effects of these alternatives on subsequent generation states. The selected intervention is informed by estimated object completeness, visible-region consistency, boundary plausibility, spatial arrangement, and uncertainty. The framework represents object visibility relationships as a directed graph and introduces a candidate intervention mechanism that can modify, reverse, relax, defer, or selectively preserve individual occlusion constraints. A lookahead evaluation module estimates the downstream consequences of each candidate intervention through partial generation trajectories, predicted object masks, visibility maps, or rendered previews. A multi-object utility function combines object completeness, boundary consistency, visibility plausibility, spatial compatibility, and computational cost. The resulting decision process is designed to distinguish between uncertain visibility relationships and relationships that are sufficiently supported by the current scene representation. LOOIO is conceptually applicable to text-to-image generation, image editing, diffusion-based inpainting, video generation, layered scene synthesis, and three-dimensional generative reconstruction. Its central research hypothesis is that evaluating alternative visibility constraints before committing to an ordering may reduce object disappearance, incomplete object reconstruction, and implausible interpenetration in scenes with ambiguous occlusion relationships. This paper introduces the conceptual formulation, mathematical representation, candidate intervention strategies, preview-based decision mechanism, implementation architecture, evaluation metrics, experimental hypotheses, and proposed validation protocols for LOOIO. No experimental superiority is claimed. The framework is presented as a testable research direction whose effectiveness, computational requirements, and generalization properties require controlled empirical investigation.
