Who Speaks for "Sister Feng"? Symbolic Annihilation by Over-Narration and the Networked Persistence of a Persona, 2009–2025
This paper conducts a longitudinal content analysis of thirty-four media items on Luo Yufeng (Sister Feng) drawn from five periods between 2009 and 2025, coding headlines, lead paragraphs, and direct quotations for nine variables (Cohen's kappa 0.650; 84.0 percent agreement across 288 cells). Reading the coded record through Tuchman's account of symbolic annihilation and Entman's definition of framing, it argues that the media performs a symbolic annihilation of Luo Yufeng not through silence but through over-narration under a degrading source ecology: her first-person voice peaks in 2016–2017 and is terminated after the 2019 deletion of her Weibo account, while by 2024–2025 mainstream media is nearly absent and self-media monopolize discourse with misery and broken-American-Dream headlines. The study extends symbolic annihilation, a theory built on invisibility, into a phase of networked persistence in which erasure operates through over-visible misery consumption.
