Root Causes of Sex Trafficking of Rohingya Females
The 1962 military coup changed the destiny of the Rohingya community. Targeted for their distinct features and skin colour, they were not accepted as part of Myanmar’s heritage. Aiming to eliminate them from Myanmar, the government undertook several repressive measures that led to deadly repercussions for this community. In their desperation to flee the country, the Rohingyas fell prey to traffickers posing as employment agents and smugglers. This article focuses on the trafficking of Rohingya women for prostitution and as forced brides, specifically investigating the root causes behind the significant rise in trafficking statistics among this ethnic group.
