The Misplaced Condition of Simultaneity in the Position–Momentum Uncertainty Relation
Introducing measurement simultaneity into the formulation of the position–momentum spread relation attributes a condition to it that it does not contain and misdirects its interpretation. Likewise, when one quantity is measured while information about the other is available, ‘simultaneous measurement of two quantities’ adds an operation that is not performed. Drawing on the established distinction between state spreads and joint-measurement inaccuracy, this article shows that simultaneous interactions, simultaneous access to data, and attribution of two quantities to the same stage are distinct conditions; conflating them changes the subject of the claim. A rereading of Heisenberg and Robertson and an examination of a scenario involving prior information clarify why having two records available at once does not guarantee that both can validly be attributed to the same situation. The resulting reconstruction makes the interpretation explicit: the relation constrains the product of two spreads in a common state; sharing a state is not equivalent to simultaneous readouts. Nor does a constraint concerning one state imply a prohibition on access to information about different stages. The reconstruction specifies the physical referent of each attribution, the source of information, and the meaning of accuracy, and establishes that simultaneous measurement is not a condition of the relation. It thereby prevents an unwarranted transformation of a claim about a state into one about measurement simultaneity, as well as the addition of a second measurement operation to a scenario involving a single active measurement.
