Certified surface-saturation times for constant-flux sphere diffusion with Chen2020 parameters (a model computation; the series is classical)

For diffusion in a sphere with uniform start x0 and constant surface flux, the surface stoichiometry is xs = x0 + βF(τ) with the classical series F(τ) = 3τ + 1/5 − 2∑ e−αn2τ/αn2, tan αn = αn. With the negative-particle parameters printed from the Chen2020 set shipped in PyBaMM 26.10.1.1 we compute rigorous enclosures (python-flint/Arb, 300 bits) of the first time t* at which xs reaches x*, for C = 1..4, x0 in {0.05, 0.25, 0.5} and x* in {1, 29866/33133 ≈ 0.9014} (24 cases, relative width at most 9.8e-14). The rigorous enclosures are exact rational bounds on τ; the seconds bounds are rounded outward after an audit found that round-to-nearest conversion had broken containment (fixed and re-verified in exact rational arithmetic). The certificate adds little beyond the closed-form long-time formula t* = (R2/3D)[(x*−x0)/(Cβ) − 1/5], which holds up to a relative correction between 8.5e-36 and 8.9e-5 (below 1e-12 in 11 of 24 cases). The value is the rigorous enclosure, an independent auditor's solver (mpmath interval arithmetic, no shared code) that reproduces it, and a model-versus-model observation (Tier X): PyBaMM's SPM and SPMe agree with the enclosure, but in PyBaMM's DFN the maximum over the electrode thickness of the surface concentration crosses 0.9014 up to 37% earlier than the certified SPM time at 1C, with a mesh dependence of about 1.5–6%, and the DFN fails to integrate at 3C and above because its state leaves its valid range (electrolyte depletion, then a surface concentration above cmax and a NaN exchange current). What was checked. Positive and negative controls (short-time asymptotics, a two-sided sum-rule bracket, mpmath and a finite-volume solver, a 10% change of the diffusivity, planted wrong roots and a wrong flux sign), and PyBaMM SPM first-crossing times within 4.2e-4 (20 radial points) and 1.7e-5 (100) of the enclosures. Independently audited by a different AI agent instance (AUDIT.md, ACCEPT_WITH_CORRECTIONS, corrections applied); no human audit. Tiers: C (Arb and mpmath enclosures), L (series, parameters), X (PyBaMM, finite volume, DFN); no Lean, Tier A none; the Elenchus ledger gate exits 0 with no findings. Limitations and non-claims. x* = 0.9014 is the parameter set's 100% state-of-charge balancing limit, not a saturation; only x* = 1 is saturation. The start states are hypothetical; one parameter set; the SPM is known to be inaccurate at high C-rate. Crank and Chen et al. 2020 were read by neither producer nor auditor. The preregistered second half of the N3 control was not run, and the preregistration has a sign slip in the flux boundary condition (the code uses the correct sign). No claim about faster charging, safety, lithium plating or real cells. PyBaMM (BSD-3-Clause) is the only third-party software used and is not redistributed.

Abstract

For diffusion in a sphere with uniform start x0 and constant surface flux, the surface stoichiometry is xs = x0 + βF(τ) with the classical series F(τ) = 3τ + 1/5 − 2∑ e−αn2τ/αn2, tan αn = αn.
