Relationship Between the Implementation of Family-Centered Care and the Satisfaction of Families of Pediatric Patients Treated in Critical Care Units: A Scoping Review

Background: Family-Centered Care (FCC) is a healthcare approach that recognizes families as active partners in pediatric care. In pediatric critical care settings, FCC plays an essential role in improving communication, family engagement, and healthcare quality while reducing psychological distress experienced by family members. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome (PICO) framework. Literature searches were performed in EBSCOhost, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases. Article selection followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Of 1,092 identified studies, 10 articles published between 2021 and 2025 met the inclusion criteria. The included studies consisted of qualitative, observational, randomized controlled trials, and quasi-experimental designs. Results: The findings indicate that FCC implementation includes effective communication, information sharing, respect for family values, family participation in decision-making, and active involvement in patient care. FCC was consistently associated with improved family engagement, enhanced care experiences, reduced parental stress and anxiety, and increased family satisfaction. Family satisfaction was primarily influenced by the quality of communication, emotional support, opportunities for participation, and a supportive care environment. Conclusion: Family-Centered Care is an effective approach to improving the quality of pediatric nursing and family satisfaction in critical care settings. However, evidence regarding FCC implementation in Pediatric High Care Units (PHCU), particularly in Indonesia, remains limited. Further research is needed to strengthen family-centered nursing practices within Indonesian pediatric critical care services.
