AN ANALYSIS OF SUBTITLED AND NON-SUBTILED VIDEOS IN TEACHING SPEAKING SKILL AT THE SEVENTH GRADE OF SMP NEGERI 1 TUHEMBERUA
Objective: Speaking skill is an important component of English language learning because it enables students to communicate ideas and information orally. This research aimed to describe how subtitled and non-subtitled videos were used in teaching speaking skill and to identify factors influencing students’ speaking skill when learning through the videos. Methods: This research employed a qualitative descriptive design involving 20 seventh-grade students and an English teacher at SMP Negeri 1 Tuhemberua. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed using thematic analysis with NVivo 12 Pro to organize and code the data. Results: The videos were integrated into Problem Based Learning (PBL) through problem presentation, video viewing, language identification, group activities, dialogue practice, and feedback. Six factors were identified: video characteristics, vocabulary, pronunciation, comprehension, grammar, and confidence. Novelty: This research provides a contextual description of how subtitled and non-subtitled videos were used together as instructional media within one structured speaking-learning process, rather than examining them as separate instructional conditions.
