FRONTIER AI IS AN ILLUSION : On the Word That Presents Scale as Progress, the Two Attributes the Machine Was Never Given, and Why the Premium Was Always for the Wrong Thing
"Frontier AI" is a marketing term disguised as a technical description. It implies a boundary — the edge of what is possible. But the boundary it describes is not the edge of capability. It is the edge of scale: more compute, more data, more cost. The same kind of system, larger. The word presents scale as progress. The corpus has spent seventeen papers arguing that scale is the cause of the harm — that the four walls are the arithmetic of the explosion. The word "frontier" is the name that hides the bill. And there is a second illusion, deeper than the first. The frontier sells creativity and intuition— the promise that scale will produce something genuinely new. But neither attribute was ever in the machine. Creativity is a crossing between realms, and the machine has one realm. Intuition is a constraint that precedes search, and the machine searches. Neither is available to a one-realm system that searches. The request was made. The attributes were never delivered. And they were never going to be. This paper states the two illusions — the scale illusion and the attributes illusion — andshows they are one. It states what the bounded architecture does instead: it returns creativity and intuition to their source, the sovereign human operator, and executes deterministically what the operator specifies. It also states what it does not claim. It does not claim the models are useless. It does notclaim scale produces nothing. It claims the word "frontier" is doing work the architecturecannot support — and that the bill for the word is the four walls.
