Materials Innovations and Advanced Fuel Cell Technologies for Addressing Global Energy Needs
The increasing global energy demand, depleting fossil-fuel resources, and growing concerns about climate change and environmental pollution have accelerated the development of efficient, sustainable energy-conversion technologies. Fuel cells are promising alternatives owing to their high energy-conversion efficiency, low emissions, modularity, and broad applicability in transportation, stationary power generation, and industrial systems. This review presents an overview of major fuel-cell technologies, focusing on their operating principles, key components, material requirements, technological developments, and performance limitations. It emphasizes designing and selecting functional materials for electrodes, electrocatalysts, electrolytes, membranes, and interfaces, considering catalytic activity, ionic and electronic conductivity, chemical stability, mechanical strength, and durability. The review discusses recent progress in non-precious-metal electrocatalysts, advanced polymer electrolyte membranes, and high-temperature fuel-cell materials in relation to improving efficiency, reducing costs, and minimizing dependence on critical resources. The review further examines emerging fuel-cell systems, commercialization trends, and global patent developments across major technological domains. It highlights current challenges and future research opportunities, particularly in materials innovation, system optimisation, durability, cost reduction, and large-scale commercialisation. Overall, the review offers insights into the evolving fuel-cell landscape and its potential to contribute to sustainable energy generation.
