Petrophysical Evaluation of the Nahr Umr Formation in the Southern Part of the East Baghdad Oil Field, Central Iraq
Well log analysis plays a vital role in the evaluation of petrophysical properties, which are essential for identifying and evaluating the hydrocarbon-bearing zones. The East Baghdad Oil Field is a site in central Iraq, nearly 20 km east of Baghdad. The current study aims to analyse the petrophysics of the Nahr Umr Formation in the field, based on well logs of selected oil wells (EB-4 and EB-6). The Interactive Petrophysics Programe (IP) was used to interpret the petrophysical properties of the formation. The well logs were corrected environmentally and used to get the lithology, shale volume, porosity, and water satu Programmeration. The neutron-density crossplot technique was applied to identify the lithology. The porosity was calculated using the three most widely used porosity logs: density, neutron, and sonic logs. Water saturation was determined based on Archie’s equation. The findings show that the porosity of the Nahr Umr Formation is between 0.10 and 0.20, and water saturation has high values; between 70% and 80%. It was found that the formation (Upper part of the formation) was productive in the higher levels of the formation, with lower water saturation and quality of the reservoir. The lower intervals of the formation, on the other hand, are rich in clay and water content and thus are not suitable for extracting hydrocarbons. This analysis demonstrates the need to conduct a petrophysical analysis of the Nahr Umr Formation in the southern part of the East Baghdad Oil Field in defining the best drilling and production zones.
