Beyond HPC7 Performance: How Eni Turned Supercomputing into an Industrial Strategy
The article looks at how Eni, the Italian energy company, has made supercomputing part of its long-term industrial strategy. In June 2026, Eni’s new HPC7 ranked sixth on the TOP500 list, and the previous HPC6 is still eighth, so Eni has two of the world’s ten most powerful systems. The authors study how more than a decade of steady investment led here, and how the systems support work from seismic imaging and reservoir simulation to CO₂ storage, new materials and fusion research. They also cover the convergence of HPC and AI, energy efficiency and strategic autonomy. The article ends with a call to train engineers who can bridge computing infrastructure and real-world applications, which is a core goal of the ACHIEVE project.
