Mapping Resveratrol Research Across Diabetic Microvascular Complications: A Bibliometric Analysis of Research Intensity and Themes

Resveratrol has been studied in diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic nephropathy (DN), and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), but raw publication counts ignore the size of each field. This bibliometric review compared resveratrol research across the three complications. We searched the Scopus database from 2016 to 2025 for related literature in the English language.Research intensity was the number of resveratrol records divided by the baseline, defined as all records on the same complication. The rate ratio (RR) divided the intensity of one complication by that of another. The primary definition, used for the main analysis, required an exact disease phrase (phrase-based).Two sensitivity definitions followed: proximity, which accepted a diabetes term within three words of the complication term, and extended-compound, which added related stilbenes to resveratrol. We audited topical precision, the share of records in which resveratrol was a main subject, and mapped author keywords with VOSviewer. The searches retrieved 369 records, of which 182 were unique.Under the primary definition, intensity was 0.52% for DN, 0.27% for DR, and 0.31% for DPN (DN versus DR RR 1.89, 95% CI 1.37-2.61).The ratio fell to 1.33 under the proximity definition and to 0.98 in a preclinical-only baseline, and it reached 1.88 for curcumin and 3.89 for quercetin.China contributed half of the records; DPN records appeared only from 2020, and seven records were clinical studies. The higher intensity in DN reflects how each literature is composed, not interest in resveratrol.Single-agent comparisons across diseases need a comparator compound and a restricted baseline.
