EVALUATING THE BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES IN SUBJECTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS WITH UTI AND MANAGING THE QUALITY OF LIFE

Background: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most significant and debilitating condition posing an adverse effect on the quality of life in affected subjects. The severity of impact in type 2 diabetes mellitus is dependent on the presence of UTIs (urinary tract infections) in most of the subjects having Type 2 diabetes mellitus which affect the quality of life and disrupt the physiological functioning. Aim: The present study was aimed to evaluate the biochemical changes in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus with UTI and managing the quality of life. Materials and Methods: The study included 240 subjects divided into 4 groups of 60 subjects each where Group I included normal healthy subjects, group II included subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus, group III included subjects with urinary tract infections, and Group IV assessed subjects with diabetes mellitus and urinary tract infections both. In all subjects from all 4 groups, levels of creatinine, urea, protein, glucose, and hemoglobin were assessed. For quality of life, it was assessed using QoL index- Diabetes III version. Results: The study results showed that there was a significant reduction in the levels of blood sugar, hemoglobin, and total protein in subjects with both UTI and diabetes mellitus compared to subjects without these conditions with p<0.05. Comparison for QOL revealed that family support, psychological status, socioeconomic status, and health and functioning in daily life are vital to maintain the quality of life in subjects with UTI, diabetes, and both conditions together in comparison to subjects without these conditions. Conclusion: The present study concludes that severity of urinary tract infection in subjects with concomitant diabetes mellitus does adversely affect the quality of life in affected subjects.
