The PPP Framework for Safe Launch Pricing: Premium, Promotion, Penetration
A new product faces a pricing dilemma: a high price may deter trial of an unproven brand, while a low price may generate trial but teach customers that this is the product's normal price, making later increases difficult. This paper proposes the PPP framework for safe launch pricing, which separates two functions of price: the positioning price, which signals the tier to which the product belongs, and the transaction price actually paid at launch. The Premium reference price is derived from the "product leader" in quality and image; the Penetration price is derived from the best-selling "market leader"; and a genuine, temporary promotion bridges the two, protecting the reference price from being replaced in customers' minds by the launch price. Price is then recovered gradually by reducing the discount in response to evidence of market acceptance rather than the passage of time. The paper presents the framework's six stages, a numerical example, a comparison with conventional penetration pricing, the literature that explains its mechanisms, and the conditions for its use and failure, including legal constraints on price reductions.
