Credit Is the Future We Try to Price Why Models, Networks, and Blockchain Cannot Eliminate Uncertainty

Credit is usually treated as a financial instrument. This essay argues that it is better understood as a structural transformation: present certainty is projected into a distribution of future outcomes, then compressed back into a present valuation. The Merton framework shows that default is not an external accident but an embedded option. Network models show that credit risk is not merely individual, but systemic. Blockchain and Proof of Solvency can reduce opacity about present balance sheets, but they cannot eliminate uncertainty about future trajectories. The conclusion is deliberately skeptical: models can price uncertainty, networks can transmit it, and cryptographic proofs can verify part of the present, but none of them can remove the future.
