Towards Sustainable Development through Human Rights

Abstract Sustainable development is not limited to economic growth or the conservation of natural resources. It also concerns people’s dignity, equality, participation, leaving, and access to essential services. Human rights provide a set of principles for ensuring that development benefits people fairly and that no community is excluded from its opportunities. This thematic paper examines the meaning of human rights and sustainable development, explains how the two concepts reinforce each other, and considers their relationship with the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It argues that development is more likely to be inclusive and lasting when public institutions protect rights, reduce discrimination, provide meaningful participation opportunities, and remain accountable. The paper also highlights the role of education in building awareness of rights and responsibilities among students. It is a conceptual discussion based on human rights and sustainable development frameworks rather than an empirical investigation.
