Slow Deep Breathing untuk Menurunkan Intensitas Nyeri Akut pada Lansia dengan Hipertensi

Background: Hypertension is a common health problem among older adults and may be accompanied by pain that affects comfort and daily activities. One non-pharmacological nursing intervention that may help reduce pain is slow and deep breathing relaxation. Objectives: To describe the application of slow and deep breathing relaxation in older adults with hypertension experiencing acute pain at the Technical Implementation Unit of Tresna Werdha Social Services in Jombang. Methods: This study used a descriptive case study approach involving two older adults with hypertension and acute pain. The intervention was provided for three days. Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and documentation. Pain intensity was assessed using a numerical rating scale. Results: Before the intervention, both patients reported a pain intensity score of six. After three days of intervention, the first patient’s pain score decreased to three, while the second patient’s score decreased to four. Conclusions: The application of slow and deep breathing relaxation was accompanied by a decrease in pain intensity in both patients. This technique may be considered a non-pharmacological nursing intervention for older adults with hypertension and acute pain. Nurses are encouraged to assess pain regularly to monitor patients’ progress and evaluate their responses to the intervention.
