Landscaping diaspora. Materiality of homes and gardens of descendants of Polish migrants in southern Brazil

People’s migration reshapes not only the demography of a place but also its natural and cultural landscape through new species, farming practices, animal breeding, and architectural styles. This article examines the multisensory landscape of southern Brazil shaped by 19th-century migrations from Central and Eastern Europe, particularly from the Polish lands. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Paraná, I analyse how descendants of Polish migrants shape and experience a ‘Polish’ village through the materiality of homes and gardens, as well as through language, food, and agricultural practices. The article contributes to diaspora studies by showing how diasporic formations are produced not only through memory and discourse but also through material, sensory, and embodied engagements with place, and by examining the values and imaginaries through which they are sustained.
