The Universality of Duality: An Investigation into the Predominant Organising Principle of Existence

This paper presents an exploratory interdisciplinary investigation into duality as a predominant organising principle of observable existence. Drawing upon examples from human biology, genetics, Hindu philosophical symbolism, mathematics, binary computing and physics, the paper examines the recurring appearance of two distinguishable or complementary principles across seemingly unrelated domains. It explores the relationship between the XX and XY chromosomal patterns and biological diversity, the symbolism of Shiva and Shakti, Ardhanarishvara and the Lingam-Yoni, the generative possibilities of binary systems, and the yogic concepts of Ida, Pingala and Sushumna. The central hypothesis is that duality appears to be predominant in the substantial reality we experience, although it is not necessarily exclusive. Other configurations and possibilities may exist beyond the familiar patterns through which we ordinarily understand existence. Rather than claiming to establish a universal scientific law, this paper invites further investigation into whether the recurrence of duality across different disciplines points towards a broader organising principle. The work is intended as an open philosophical inquiry, bringing together established scientific observations, mathematical illustrations, traditional philosophical concepts and personal interpretations.
