Derek Walcott's Omeros: A Textual Analysis Based on the Haiji Literature 2.0 Framework
Abstract: This paper offers an ontological analysis of Derek Walcott’s epic Omeros through the framework of Haiji Literature. Haiji Literature 1.0 poses the question “where do the narrator and the sea stand?”; Haiji Literature 2.0 conducts textual analysis through the model H₂.₀ = f(P, L, B, I, W). This study finds that the core of Omeros lies in the following: the canoe, as a “patchwork boat,” carries the memory of indigenous trees felled, the trauma of African slaves transported across the sea, and historical naval battles, while the Creole language is pressed into silence within struggles over linguistic rights. It projects people, history, and destiny from land onto the sea, thereby achieving a major breakthrough at the textual level. The sea-based quality of Omeros does not consist in the fact that it “writes about the ocean,” but rather in its making the “sea” a field of five-dimension mutual constitution: ontological position (P), labor extraction (L), ethnic boundary (B), imperial vehicle (I), and linguistic right (W). The interaction of these five dimensions points toward the depth of the epic and toward the deep site of colonization and being colonized. Keywords: Haiji Literature; Omeros; Walcott; patchwork-boat subjectivity; ontological position; linguistic right
