Awareness Across Meditation and Everyday Life: Integrating Experience through Five Modes of Awareness in the M⁵ Life Programme

This is the fourth of seven papers in the M⁵ Life Programme. Papers 1 to 3 established a daily breath practice, a sequence for differentiating perception, feeling, thought, and action within meditation, and the application of that differentiation in daily life. Differentiation raises a question it cannot answer by itself: what remains common as contents, activities, and settings change? This paper proposes that the answer is awareness, in a modest phenomenological sense: whatever is experienced appears to someone in some manner, whether or not that knowing is reflected upon. Within that common condition, five modes describe different ways of relating to what appears: immersive awareness lives an engagement from within; meta-awareness recognises it; memory awareness registers the past shaping the present encounter; moving awareness tracks experience as it develops toward response; and open awareness relaxes exclusive capture by content. Crossing the modes with the five M⁵ dimensions gives a matrix in which many separate skills become a small set of relations. The paper distinguishes awareness as a condition, as a dimension, and as configured by modes, showing that the reflexive row of the matrix is not circular. It argues that meditation and post-meditation share no state but a recoverable orientation, and it specifies transition exercises in both directions. Three tensions are named: reification, recursive monitoring, and bypassing. Four propositions follow, each with conditions under which it would fail. No new empirical data are reported, and no ontological claim about consciousness is asserted.
