WOMEN’S OPPRESSION IN CAROL LYNCH WILLIAMS’ THE CHOSEN ONE
Woman, like man, is a sociable human, whose existence should be equal to man. However, there is something wrong in viewing woman. This study aims to analyze the forms of women's oppression portrayed in Carol Lynch Williams’ novel The Chosen One. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, using the novel as the primary data source. The data are collected through close reading and documentation by identifying dialogues, narration, and events that reflect women's oppression. The analysis is conducted by applying feminist literary criticism to explore how patriarchal values, religious authority, and traditional gender roles influence women's lives and limit their freedom. The result show the woman undergoes oppression by man’s domination represented by the prophet and his apostles that nobody cannot get rid of their policy. Besides, the study also shows her resistance against the oppression that comes into fruitful such as escaping from the Compound and getting help from the police officer outside the Compound.
