Unplugged Coding Innovation Integrated with Culturally Responsive Teaching Based on Surabaya's Local Culture to Enhance Students Computational Thinking Skills

Informatics learning at SMP Negeri 52 Surabaya faces constraints of limited computer facilities and slow device performance. This condition has the potential to hinder the learning process and students’ understanding of computational thinking concepts. This study aims to determine the improvement of seventh-grade students’ computational thinking abilities through the Unplugged Coding learning media innovation integrated with Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) based on Surabaya’s local culture. This study uses a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental method and a one-group pretest-posttest design. The learning media used is “Coding Jelajah Kota Surabaya”, a educational game without digital devices that invites students to construct algorithmic steps to reach a destination by overcoming various obstacles. The historical context and Surabaya’s local environment are integrated into the game to connect Informatics material with the environment close to students’ lives. The research subjects consisted of 30 seventh-grade students from SMP Negeri 52 Surabaya. Data were collected through a pretest-posttest assessment of computational thinking abilities, then analyzed using descriptive statistics, Paired Samples t-Test, and N-Gain calculation. The results showed that the students’ average score increased from 41.50 on the pretest to 90.33 on the posttest. The Paired Samples t-Test indicated a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores ((t(29)=24.579); (p<0.001)). The average N-Gain reached 0.832 or 83.16%, categorized as very good based on the criteria used. This result shows a rise in students’ computational thinking abilities after implementing Unplugged Coding media based on Surabaya’s local culture. Thus, the “Coding Jelajah Kota Surabaya” media has the potential to be an contextual Informatics learning alternative, especially in conditions of limited technology facilities.
