Enhancing circular economy practices throughout the life cycle of a construction project in Sri Lanka using the 6R principles

Purpose Upon analysing the existing condition of sustainable practices in the construction industry, it was identified that the industry has more potential to improve the circular economy (CE) practices. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate how to enhance CE practices throughout the life cycle of a construction project in Sri Lanka. Design/methodology/approach A literature review and a qualitative research choice have been adopted in this study. This study consists of two rounds of semi-structured interviews with construction professionals with CE expertise, selected using purposive sampling. The data were analysed through NVivo code-based software. Findings The study revealed 17 measures that can be taken at both corporate level and policy level to enhance the CE practices to improve the sustainability in the construction industry. Further, this study provides a framework which consists of CE practices at each construction stage according to 6R principles and the measures to enhance the CE practices. Originality/value This study's novel contribution provides a benchmark study to the industry providing measures to be taken at both policy level and corporate level to enhance CE practices. This study contributes practical insights to elevate the CE practices from its prevailing status.
