Design and Construction of a Roll-Axis Attitude Control Test Rig with Remote PID Tuning and Real-Time Monitoring
This final-year research report presents the design, physical construction, and closed-loop control system validation of a roll-axis attitude control test rig. The platform integrates an embedded microcontroller architecture with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to execute real-time attitude determination algorithms. A custom wireless telemetry pipeline was developed to stream state variables to a ground station interface, enabling live performance monitoring and remote, non-disruptive PID parameter tuning. Experimental results validated the rig's capacity to achieve stable roll stabilization with minimal steady-state error and optimized step-response characteristics. This research establishes a cost-effective, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testbed that serves as a baseline configuration for verifying flight control laws applicable to low-cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and micro-satellite systems.
