Frequency-induced Tipping: Resonance-Driven Tipping in a Threshold Predator-Prey System

Tipping points refer to abrupt, substantial, and often irreversible transitions in dynamic systems that can be triggered by minor perturbations. Existing tipping mechanisms are usually classified by the nature of the trigger: bifurcation-induced tipping occurs when a parameter crosses a critical threshold, noise-induced tipping is caused by random perturbations, rate-induced tipping occurs when a system fails to track a moving attractor, and phase-induced tipping is triggered by timed perturbations relative to an oscillatory state. In this paper, we identify a new mechanism for tipping: frequency-induced tipping, in which periodic forcing drives a transition through resonant amplification. This occurs by destabilization of an equilibrium via subthreshold perturbations of the appropriate frequency. Filippov analysis of a piecewise-smooth model identifies admissible crossings that lead either to predator loss or to extinction of predator and prey, and numerical simulations show that tipping persists after smoothing of the thresholds. These results extend the current tipping framework to include critical transitions under recurrent environmental forcing.
