When Not to Mint Another PID for Article Versions

Explores how the revised NISO Journal Article Versions (JAV) recommendations uses semantic versioning to identify article changes without minting a new PID for every update. Using examples from preprints, Version of Record corrections, repository copies, and post-publication review, we look at when a stable work-level PID is enough and when a new PID is warranted. This is increasingly important for AI systems, which need to know not only which article they found, but which version they used and whether it is current. The goal is greater version precision without unnecessary PID proliferation.

Abstract

Explores how the revised NISO Journal Article Versions (JAV) recommendations uses semantic versioning to identify article changes without minting a new PID for every update. Using examples from preprints, Version of Record corrections, repository copies, and post-publication review, we look at when a stable work-level PID is enough and when a new PID is warranted. This is increasingly important for AI systems, which need to know not only which article they found, but which version they used and whether it is current. The goal is greater version precision without unnecessary PID proliferation.
