Former Latino/x Gang Members' Transition into Higher Education Using Possible Selves: A Pilot Study

Many gang-involved youth dream of earning college degrees and becoming respected members of their communities, but structural forces prevent their success. In this pilot study, I used the theory of possible selves and life history methodology to explore the pathways into postsecondary education of four former Latino gang members who started in community colleges and eventually earned bachelor's and advanced degrees. Findings centered on participants’ motivations and the hurdles they faced in reaching and achieving success in higher education. This article aims to assist stakeholders in developing or enhancing systems that support this population's thriving in postsecondary education institutions.

Abstract

Many gang-involved youth dream of earning college degrees and becoming respected members of their communities, but structural forces prevent their success. In this pilot study, I used the theory of possible selves and life history methodology to explore the pathways into postsecondary education of four former Latino gang members who started in community colleges and eventually earned bachelor's and advanced degrees. Findings centered on participants’ motivations and the hurdles they faced in reaching and achieving success in higher education. This article aims to assist stakeholders in developing or enhancing systems that support this population's thriving in postsecondary education institutions.
