Python Backend Integration with Weather API using Flask and FastAPI
This paper presents a comprehensive study of building Python-based backend systems with seamless integration of real-time weather APIs using two modern frameworks: Flask and FastAPI. As web-based services demand increasingly dynamic and data-driven responses, the ability to aggregate external data sources—such as weather information—via RESTful APIs becomes critical. The study covers the architectural design of backend services, the request-response lifecycle, third-party API authentication, error handling, data serialization, middleware design, and performance benchmarking between Flask and FastAPI. The paper also discusses deployment strategies using Docker and cloud platforms, security considerations including JWT authentication and rate limiting, real-world use cases across multiple industry verticals, and future directions including GraphQL and WebSocket-based weather streaming. The findings indicate that FastAPI, owing to its asynchronous capabilities, Pydantic-based validation, and automatic documentation generation, outperforms Flask in high-concurrency environments by nearly 3.75x in average response time. Flask, however, remains a reliable and production-proven choice for smaller, prototypeoriented systems and teams with limited async programming experience. Both frameworks are fully capable of consuming the OpenWeatherMap REST API, and the choice between them depends primarily on scalability requirements, team expertise, and long-term maintenance considerations.
