THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY, COMMON DISEASES, AND MODERN APPROACHES TO RESPIRATORY HEALTH

The respiratory system is an essential physiological system responsible for gas exchange, oxygen delivery to tissues, and the elimination of carbon dioxide from the body. It also contributes to acid–base balance, vocalization, olfaction, and the protection of the organism against airborne pathogens and environmental pollutants. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the anatomical organization, physiological mechanisms, and clinical significance of the human respiratory system. It examines the functions of the upper and lower respiratory tracts, the structure of the alveolar-capillary membrane, the mechanics of pulmonary ventilation, and the regulation of breathing by the nervous system and chemical receptors. Particular attention is given to common respiratory disorders, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and respiratory infections. The article also discusses major risk factors, such as tobacco smoke, ambient and household air pollution, occupational exposure, allergens, and infectious agents. Contemporary diagnostic approaches, including spirometry, pulse oximetry, chest imaging, and selected laboratory investigations, are reviewed in relation to their clinical applications. Evidence-based prevention, vaccination, smoking avoidance, environmental risk reduction, and appropriate management of chronic respiratory diseases are highlighted as important strategies for improving respiratory health. This article is based on a narrative review of established physiological knowledge, authoritative clinical guidance, and relevant scientific literature rather than original experimental research. Understanding the respiratory system is fundamental to medical education, early recognition of respiratory disorders, and the development of effective preventive and clinical strategies.
