Drivers and Perceived Effectiveness of Climate Change Adaptation Strategies in Poultry Production in Ghana’s Northern Region

Over the past decades, agriculture in northern Ghana has experienced adverse effects of climate change, necessitating increased efforts by the government and key stakeholders to promote climate adaptation strategies among farm households. Using data from 300 poultry farmers and a multivariate probit model, this study examines drivers of climate adaptation strategies in the northern region of Ghana. In addition, Kendall’s concordance method is employed to assess perceived effectiveness of the strategies. Results reveal that complementarity and trade-off in climate adaptation strategy choices are key dynamics shaping adaptation behavior among poultry farmers in the northern region of Ghana. In addition, socioeconomic, farm-specific, and institutional factors are important drivers of climate adaptation in poultry production. Specifically, farmer’s sex, education, association membership, farm location, and flock size are significantly associated with adaptation decisions. Farmers perceive housing strategies (low-side wall, housing design, fence wiring) and feeding strategies (vitamin provision, diet reformulation, change feed times, feeding birds with chilled water) as the most and second most effective climate adaptation strategies, respectively. These findings support considering interactions among climate adaptation choices and investigating potentially useful bundles in poultry production in northern Ghana.
